I love David. He was called a man after God’s own heart. What a privilege to be so close to God. And yet, David was only a man. He was a mere shepherd boy when he killed Goliath and then later became the greatest King of Israel.
He never lost a battle and yet he was still just a man. Throughout his life he loved and trusted in the Lord. This gives me great hope and assurance. David loved the Lord and served him all his days. But, as a man, he was also flawed. He had an affair with Bathsheba and even had her husband killed in battle in an attempt to cover his sin.
I think we can all be like that. We don’t want our sins known. We even think we can hide them from God. David repented for his sins. He wrote Psalm 51 as a lament for what he had done. Read it sometime, it is a true outpouring of sorrow for the sins he committed. But, God Forgives!
The main reason I love David is because I can relate to him. I truly love the Lord but I find myself committing sins that I know are wrong. However, I know that when I repent and ask for forgiveness I am truly forgiven. Jesus said as far as the east is from the west. Think about that. I also love the song lyrics that say our sins are as far as from one scarred hand to the other.
Our God is a loving and forgiving God. He loves us despite all our shortcomings. He gave us His Holy Spirit to dwell within us to remind us of our sins. But, most importantly, we are his children. He will forgive us when we ask.
Give thanks to the Lord for He is good and His mercies endure forever.
