I love the story in 1 Kings 17 about Elijah. He has fled to the desert to avoid being killed by King Ahab. God had the ravens bring him meat and bread each day and he drank from the brook.
Just when we think things are going great, boom, the brook dried up. He has no water. Don’t you know that Elijah must have scratched his head in wonder? How can this be? But being the faithful servant Elijah was he again sought the Lord for help.
The Lord told him to go into the town and find a widow there and ask her for bread.
1Kings 17:12 “As surely as the Lord your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.”
Can you imagine being in that situation? We are so blessed in America that not only do we have more food than we can eat, we can also choose whatever we like and have it delivered to our door.
This widow trusted God and made a cake of flour from her very last portion and God performed a great miracle. The meal and oil didn’t run out until the drought was over. (Read 1 Kings 17, it is full of God’s mercies.)
We sometimes get into situations that we feel are hopeless. We can feel there is no way out. As we recall this story (any many like it), we should turn to the Lord for all our needs. He is always there for us. He is waiting with open arms. Trust Him and call upon Him. You will be blessed.
