I love the parable Jesus tells of the mustard seed. It is one of the tiniest seeds and yet produces a plant that can grow as tall as 20 to 30 feet. The parable is in Matthew 17:20. The disciples had just tried to heal a sick boy and were unable to. Jesus came to them and they asked why they couldn’t heal him.
He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
We tend to think that a little faith is not good enough. We think we have to have complete faith. While this is what the Lord wants for us, it is not always the case.
We have to realize that a little faith can grow into an enormous faith. If we spend time in the Word and in prayer the Holy Spirit will increase our faith exponentially.
When Jesus called Peter to walk on the water Peter had faith and believed he could do it. He got out of the boat and was actually walking on the stormy sea. When he took his eyes off Jesus he began to sink. He no longer had faith. He called out to Jesus and He took his hand and they walked to the boat. Peter knew whom to call on when he was in trouble.
The next time you find yourself in a situation that requires a tremendous faith, pray for the Holy Spirit to grow your faith. The Lord wants us to have a strong faith – it is His will. If we pray for His will to be done, He will surely answer that prayer.
