In The Gospel of Luke Chapter 10 we learn the story of Mary and Martha. They have heard Jesus teach and seen Him perform miracles and they believe that He is the Messiah.
Jesus has come to their house for dinner and Martha is very anxious to make everything perfect while her sister, Mary, is sitting at Jesus’ feet taking in every word He has to say.
Martha becomes irritated and comes to Jesus and says, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
If Jesus were coming to your house today what would be your reaction? While we understand that Mary wanted everything to be excellent for Him, we also understand that sitting at Jesus’ feet and learning from Him is much more important.
In fact, Jesus replied, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her.”
What we have to realize that Jesus is always in our home. He is here when there are dirty dishes in the sink, the bed is not made and there is clutter all around. These things are not important in the Kingdom of God. He is here to teach us and to bring glory to God. We let ourselves get distracted as Martha and miss the most important thing.
Jesus is here with you right now. We should be spending time with Him and growing in our faith. We need to prioritize our time and make Him first. You’ll still find time to do the dishes and make the bed. Learn from the story of Mary and Martha. Let the Lord be first in your life.
