When Jesus went into the Garden of Gethsemane He asked the disciples to wait and pray for him. He said, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” (Matthew 26:38) Later He tells the disciples in Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.”
Jesus took Peter, James and John with Him to pray. This was the night He was going to be betrayed and would be crucified the very next day. He was overwhelmed with sorrow. I’m sure most of that sorrow was caused by the fact that He would no longer be here with all of us. He knew He had so much more work to do to bring the people to believe He was The Messiah.
There are so many things I want to do to be a better Christian. My greatest desire is to be more Christ-like. Yet, each day I find myself “falling asleep” on the job. I can do things that I know I shouldn’t. I let Satan’s lies tell me that it is ok when I know it isn’t. I can’t believe I let him get the best of me. I say things that I regret and don’t do things I know I should.
Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves. He knew that the disciples would not be able to stay awake even in His last few hours on this earth. He knows we are weak.
Nevertheless, we should continue to strive to be more like Christ. We should study His Word each day and spend quality time with Him in prayer. He knows our heart and He loves us anyway. Praise God!
