I’m sure you’ve heard the term “Agape Love”. Do you know what it means? You know how loosely we throw the word “love” around today. We say we love ice cream, we love our spouses and children and we love God. Can that “love” be the same word?
The Greeks had four terms for love. They use the term philia for brotherly love (as in Philadelphia). Another term is eros which I’m sure you can surmise is erotic love between a man and wife. The term storge means love or affection as we have for our family or children.
The final Greek word for love is Agape. Agape love is the love of God that He has for His children. Agape love is a love that expects nothing in return. God loves us even when we don’t love Him or even acknowledge that He is God! He loves us in spite of ourselves. No matter what, God loves us.
Scripture tells us that “God is love.” He is pure love and His love is beyond our comprehension. We have a great love for others but it pales in comparison to the love of God. He loves us so much that He sent His only Son for our salvation.
Can you imagine such love? No matter what we do or don’t do, the love of God surrounds us. How would it change your life if you felt that intense love every minute of every day? It would be hard to become discouraged or even angry. It would give you a great sense of wellbeing to know how loved you are. Whom shall we fear?
We are loved by the Most High God. We are His children and He wants us to know Him so well that we feel that love and can share it with others. Share His love with someone today.
