Most of the time when we think of darkness it is an ominous thought. Bad things can happen in the dark. You never know what is lurking around the corner. Jesus’ birth brought light to the world starting with the star that guided The Three Kings to Jerusalem. Jesus is the light of the world.
Genesis 1 tells us that there was darkness until God said, “Let there be light.” Can you imagine living in constant darkness? I don’t know how the people in the Arctic Circle do it. It would be so depressing.
In John 1:4-5, John says of Jesus, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Have you ever been in Carlsbad Caverns when they turn off all the lights? That is the most profound darkness I’ve ever experienced and yet, if you light one small match, the darkness is overcome. That is what John is telling us. The world was filled with darkness until Jesus came to earth to fill it with His Light.
Jesus is the Light of the World. There is more than a metaphor here. He literally illumines not only our eyes but our heart and soul as well. His light lets us see God the Father as He truly is. Jesus says if you have seen me you have seen the Father.
It is also to remind us of that glorious light God placed in the heavens to proclaim the birth of the Christ Child – the Light of the World. His Light also shines through us if we are filled with His Spirit. I think that is why Christmas is filled with lights.
So, as you are rushing out and about this year, take time to notice all the lights, remember the reason: Jesus is the Light of the World.
