What do you think of when you think of power? I don’t mean like electrical power but strong power – strength. What is the most powerful thing you know?
Having lived on a sailboat, the first thing that comes to my mind is that water is incredibly powerful. It is bigger than we are and it has a force that in a hurricane or tsunami can completely devastate everything in its path. Mere men are no comparison for the power of water or the forces of nature.
This makes me recall the scripture in Matthew 8 where Jesus calms the storm. He is in the boat crossing the Sea of Galilee when a terrible storm arose. The disciples were terrified they were going to perish. They awakened Jesus and asked if He didn’t care that they all drown. Read Jesus’ response in verses 26b-27:
“Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”
Can you imagine? The disciples were sure they would all be lost and Jesus is so calm that He is sleeping. Jesus knew there was nothing for them to worry about. He had power over the winds and the waves.
There is a popular Contemporary Christian song called Just Say Jesus. The lyrics are that when you don’t know what to say, just say Jesus. No matter the circumstance, He has the power to overcome. He has overcome Satan and his evil powers. He has overcome death.
When we are faced with the storms of our life, we should know to immediately call upon Jesus, our Lord and Savior. He has all authority in heaven and on earth. He has the power to raise Lazarus from the dead. He has the power to calm any storm we encounter.
