If you asked me to describe myself in one word, the last word I would use would be holy. Holy sounds so righteous and beyond reproach. It sounds so perfect and so “Godly”. This absolutely doesn’t describe me. I am a sinner and one of the worst.
Yet, 1 Peter 1:15-16 tells us: “But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy.’”
Holy means set apart – set apart from sin and impurity, and set apart to God. We are to be set apart from the world and its sin nature and instead live our life for Him and not the lusts of the world.
God is asking us to strive for moral purity. He wants us to lead our life as closely as we can to the example of Christ. Our hope is in Christ alone. God knows that we are human and will never be perfect until we are in heaven with Him, but He is asking us to give it our best to try to attain as much holiness as we can while we are still on earth.
He is asking us to be His disciples and bring others to know Him. He wants us to pierce the darkness to let His light in. This is a dark world. God’s gift of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, fills our world with the glorious light of hope and joy.
Does God really expect us to be holy? This sounds so foreign to me. I would call it impossible but we know that nothing is impossible with God. I am going to spend more time in prayer trying to attain this holiness in my life. I pray you will do the same.
